Rivers, Roads, and Shores
The basic set doesn’t include any stamps depicting rivers or roads. You can create these with stencils (see below), or draw them with pens.

When using hex paper, I draw rivers and roads that wind along the lines between hexes.

  • River = Solid line
  • Road = Dashed line
  • Coast = Solid line, with parallel dotted line for shoals or beaches.

For best results, use a pen with a 3mm nib. If the line is too thick, it will seem out of place next to the stamped artwork.

If you’re drawing the shoreline, try to vary the coastline according to the terrain adjacent to it. For example, the coastline near a swamp will have lots of little inlets, whereas the coastline near a mountain might be more angular.

The Perilous Shores expansion includes a 3/4″ stamp which depicts a rocky shoreline. This can be used to stamp out a coast, or to create other types of terrain (such as ridgelines or even caves).

Stencils

You can use stencils to create homemade hex paper, adding colored backgrounds to your maps!

If you’re using water-based inks to create colored backgrounds, you can dip a brush in water and draw it across the paper to create rivers, roads, and trails. This takes some practice, but once you’ve learned the technique, it’s very satisfying to paint rivers using actual water.

If you’re using stencils to make colored hex maps, you can use a separate stencil to create rivers. The stencil preserves the gap between hexes, which makes the river appear as though it is part of the underlying map.
